Before we get started let’s lay out what we will be going over in today’s blog.
- What is Self Sufficiency
- Why is being self sufficient so important
- How to start a self sufficient lifestyle
- How will being self sufficient benefit me?
Number 1 – What is Self Sufficiency?
Firstly, self sufficiency is a style of life that takes away any dependency of any outside help. To begin the goal is to rely on yourself for the basics of life. Then the next question is; what are the basics of life? In a survival situation the basics of life are fire, shelter, water, and food. And in a survival situation you would want to tackle these respectively. To remain self sufficient you want the majority of your food water and shelter to be all in your hands. Additionally, in today’s world you really don’t have to worry about fire so much in urban areas. So, we will change fire to electricity.
Number 2 – Why is Self Sufficiency Important?
Why is self sufficiency important? Well, Imagine you have eaten something that just doesn’t settle right with your stomach and the symptoms come on in the middle of the night. No pharmacy is open, stores are generally not open, and you are stuck to your toilet seat. Wouldn’t it be great to have something at your house readily available, that you can calm your stomach with? Well there are herbs that you can grow whether you live on acres of land in Wyoming or even if you live in a postage stamp apartment in New York. The same goes for pain management, arthritis, cuts and scrapes. The great thing about these herbs is they can be replanted. Additionally, these herbs are far less harmful to your body than over the counter drugs and they cost way less!
How to Start?
Firstly to start a self-sufficient lifestyle you have to find where you are dependent. By finding where you are dependent, you can begin to take back control. The areas that you will likely be dependent on are; food, water, and medicine. For food and medicine you can grow a garden that suffices all of your needs. There is a really good book I will link below that gives you all of the medicinal plants and their uses. To expand on that, for water you can get a water catchment system to catch and filter out the water for drinking and irrigation. And this is how you start a life of self sufficiency.
How will being Self-Sufficient Benefit Me?
This is a great question and probably the most important. The benefits of being self-sufficient goes far beyond having a garden and some water. Primarily living this lifestyle will give you independence in areas of your life. Also it will allow you to save money to put it towards things to make you more self-sufficient. Or! You can save it up to go on that trip you’ve been thinking about. Starting a life of self sufficiency gets you closer to the life you’ve always dreamed of.
