Best Security Products – 7 Of the best products for securing your home
Previously in my last blog, I mentioned the 4 “D’s”; Deter, Detect, Deny, Defend. The 4 “D’s” are the four levels of self-protection. In this blog, we will be covering the 3rd “D”, Deny. To deny is not only telling the potential intruder “No, you cannot enter my home.”.
It also is a strategy of fortifying/securing your home so that it is harder for them to come in. We worked with home invasion as our scenario in a past blog so we’ll keep the same theme today. In this scenario, we have completed the two steps before “Deny”, which are “Deter” and “Detect”. “Deter” is to try to make your house look challenging to the burglar. “Detect” is when you detect the possible intruder and try to get a clear picture of any identifiable features that would be useful to their arrest. Then if the burglar is not deterred from the property you would try to rely on your 3rd “D”, Deny. Where you deny entry.
This does not have to be physical or verbal. This step is all about security and making it as hard as possible for them to enter your home. We never want to get to the 4th “D” which is defend. We want the local authorities to deal with the threat. So with these methods explained in this blog, you will be able to delay their entry to let the police respond and keep yourself, your family, and your hard-earned belongings safe.
What Is Home Security
What is home security? Home security is where you fortify/secure all entry points in your home.
Here is a list of some entry points in your home you may not have thought about when securing your home:
- All doors leading outside.
- Windows
- Garage Door
- Chimnee
- Doggy doors
- Backyard/frontyard gates
- Crawl spaces
All of these act as entry points to your home. You can secure these different ways. For your entry doors you will want to use some of the following products. These items on your entry doors will make it extremely difficult for a criminal to access your home.
- Cut Proof locks
- Heavy duty hinges
- Security Doors
- Door Reinforcements
For Windows you’ll want to look into these products. Along with a security system, these products will reinforce the weakest of the entry points and will render your home inaccessible to an intruder.
- Window screens
- Wrought Iron Bars
- Shatter Proof windows
- Shatter Resistant Film / Tint
- Upgraded Locks
- Shatter detecting alarms
Security Tip!
Did you know that one of the easiest ways a burglar can get into your home is through the garage door? But how do they do it? If you take a coat hanger and straighten it out, you then can stick the coat hanger in the top of the garage door. With a little luck and finesse you can hook the emergency release pulldown handle. Then tug. When you pull on the handle it releases the locking mechanism to hold the door down and now you’re able to lift the door with ease. How do you combat this? Great question! You can cut your emergency handle off and that gives you the ability to pull the string still and won’t give unwanted access to your home.
Forgotten Points of Entry
For the next section we will talk about the entry points that we normally don’t think about and I will give out some good theories as to how to secure these points. I will also give some scenarios that you should be aware of.
Now let’s talk about uncommon entry ways. If any of these burglars are trying to access your home utilizing these entry ways. You probably have unknowingly given them the idea that you have something in your home that’s worth it. We will start off with your chimney. Chimneys have a flute that you have to open and shut to allow air flow so that your home does not get filled with smoke. Be sure to close this flute when you are done using the fireplace and the fire is completely out. This will prevent unwanted people coming into your home like the anti santa clause.
Doggy doors have been known to be used for entry of a home and are more commonly used than the chimney. If you get the cheap-o brand of doggy doors they have a plastic swinging door and a plastic block to keep the dog from going outside. However this can be easily broken and utilized by menaces. There are some really cool high tech doggy doors that use collar tags to unlock the door for the dog. You should be cautious when using these because all it takes is the collar tag to open the door. Not the actual dog. The collar can always be removed from the dog.
